Taking refuge

Even in my fog-addled brain, after a sleepless night on the plane, I sensed immediately that the odd group of people boarding the transit bus next to me were no ordinary travellers. First of all, they were shepherded by a minute, Asian woman who made sure they got on the bus for Terminal 5 at Heathrow. At the other end, a young man, holding a clipboard, tried to corral them all in the same direction.

I am writing this barely an hour since the US Congress passed a bill aimed at profoundly altering our healthcare system, all in the name of selfishness and capitalism. If this bill ever became law, people like me, with a serious or chronic disease, no matter how far in the past, would be charged considerably more for health insurance than healthy people, with no cap.

Sticking with one’s tribe to survive the next four years

protester-baton-rougeI am mulling over the idea of participating in the women’s march scheduled to take place in Washington DC on January 21, one day after the Presidential inauguration. The march is meant, not so much to protest a President who, willingly or unwillingly, will be my President for the next four years, but to send a signal that a majority of women will not take any assault on women’s rights of any kind lying down.

Hillary Clintony She came on stage wearing a long, white organza jacket over black pants and a smile that could not be contained. She was beaming, savoring the historical moment, proud even. And why shouldn’t she?  Hillary Rodham Clinton will be the very first female nominee of a major political party to the Presidency of the United States. It has taken long enough.
