(5) Things we love…#139

Posted in Things We Love

After a couple of dormant weeks, I will be working for the entire wee-end. So you go frolic on my behalf and have a drink or two.
One. Big Sur, on the Californian coast, is one of the most beautiful places on earth. It’s where I got married and where I advise all newcomers to California to go to experience nature and beauty at its best. I even fantasized living there: pristine, somewhat remote, no traffic, no stores but quite a few tourists in Summer. But not this Summer. Due to a massive landslide at one end of town and a collapsed bridge at the other, the inhabitants can get in and out by bike only.  It’s been months since a car has gotten through – a disaster for the few hotels and businesses. The photographs, though, are amazing. If you are in the neighbourbood, take a hike there.

Two. A neighbour has gotten into the annoying habit of flying a drone, mainly to see what renovations are being performed across the street. Weirdly enough, drones are not regulated yet so, short of citing somebody for noise or invasion of privacy, there is not much recourse. When the drone came over our house, I yelled a string of profanities. He stopped. Besides disturbing the peace, drones can take amazing aerial photographs (images by Ming Chen).

Three. What is England’s fascination with giant horses carved on hillsides?

Four. Leonor of Felt Buddies suggested to tell Siri “I see a little silhouetto of a man” and see what happens. I suggest you try it too if you are feeling cranky.

Five. Pompous? Check. Stupid moniker? Check. But I do like his music.

  2. Is this the Westbury White Horse in Wiltshire? My great-grandmother was born in Westbury (not that that is interesting to anyone else).

    • Not quite sure but I do know they are in England, mostly in the southern part.

      • Yes, the white horses are all in the south, where the chalklands are. In the north, it’s all limestone which is harder.

  3. I’m sad I won’t be able to visit Big Sur. I hope they manage to fix things soon. I had never listened to Father John Misty, not bad! Macaulay has also cleaned up nicely lately, I saw a picture of him with short hair and looking healthy, and it was very much a Neville Longbottom moment!
Glad I could help with #4, I had such a laugh over asking Siri silly things 🙂

    • Today I told Siri that I loved her. She replied “I know”, in the most seductive manner. I know – I should occupy my time with nobler occupations…
