Thought for the week…#193

Posted in Things We Love

olive treesYou must take living so seriously

That even at 70, for example,

you’ll plant olive trees –

And not for your children, either,

But because although you fear death

you don’t believe it,

Because living, I mean, weighs heavier.

  1. I love this. Not 70, but 56 and I am planting olive trees and some citrus for the very reason he describes so beautifully. Living is more important than contemplating death.

I thought of you when I read it, planting olive trees in McG – that is why I posted it.

  2. I do not know the author of that quote but agree with him fully.
My mother in law recently, at 80, just bought a new house and moved from Plettenberg Bay to Johannesburg.

I wasn’t that familiar with him either. Turkish poet, from the turn of the last century. My mother, who is approaching 80, is still shuttling between Italy and Los Angeles. May we age that well!

I am not familiar with Nazim’s work but I am 70 and still plant trees including an Olive last year to fill a space not because of death. I wonder if the translation is a bit awry. Today we are moving house – downsizing – and the new owners have a flourishing arbor.

I read as a celebration of life. Even at 70, life beats harder than any thoughts of death. Good luck with your move. Always stressful. Enjoy your new house and plant more trees.
