  1. In 1966 I was privileged to hear Bobby Kennedy give a speech at UCT on the ‘Day of Affirmation’.
It was, without doubt, the most wonderful, galvanising speech I have ever heard in my life.
The SA Government had tried to stop his visit and failed, and the place was crawling with BOSSmen listening and taking notes.
The first section of his speech was a masterpiece. He seemed to be talking about South Africa and criticising the regime – and the audience was full of tension wondering how long this would be tolerated before it was shut down. Then he said that he was talking about the USA, and we all realised how both countries had a remarkably similar history as he went on we all felt ‘the ripple of Hope’ to which he referred. For me it was a seminal political moment, and one I will never, never forget.
