In 2010, photographer Tim Flach published his extraordinary dog portraits. This year, he’s back with More Than Human (UK; public library) — a collection of striking, elegant portraits of our fellow beings. See more of Flach’s breathtaking work on his site and treat yourself to a little heartwarming loveliness.

2. Tune
One of my favourite songs by a group of my favourite men. R.E.M. and MTV came of age together. The band released its first single in July 1981, just weeks before the network premiered its first music video. From that point on, MTV documented everything about R.E.M, their music, their stories, and ultimately, their decision to disband in 2011. That story, beginning to end, is chronicled in REMTV. Perfect Circle is from that collection. It was written by the band’s drummer – Bill Berry. Just beautiful.

3. Thought
Frank Sinatra’s views on organized religion, beautifully articulated in an interview with Playboy Magazine in 1963. A fascinating, progressive and evolved take – that could give many of today’s ‘experts’ a run for their money. Sinatra, for the record, was an atheist.

“I’ve got no quarrel with men of decency at any level. But I can’t believe that decency stems only from religion. And I can’t help wondering how many public figures make avowals of religious faith to maintain an aura of respectability. Our civilization, such as it is, was shaped by religion, and the men who aspire to public office anyplace in the free world must make obeisance to God or risk immediate opprobrium. Our press accurately reflects the religious nature of our society, but you’ll notice that it also carries the articles and advertisements of astrology and hokey Elmer Gantry revivalists. We in America pride ourselves on freedom of the press, but every day I see, and so do you, this kind of dishonesty and distortion not only in this area but in reporting — about guys like me, for instance, which is of minor importance except to me; but also in reporting world news. How can a free people make decisions without facts? If the press reports world news as they report about me, we’re in trouble.”

Nothing has changed. Read the rest of the article here. http://boingboing.net/2014/08/31/frank-sinatras-february-196.html

4. Teatime
I love the idea of revitalising vintage crockery by adding a modern twist. Honestly WTF did a tutorial around it – sticking images of bugs to cutesy teacups and plates. Would love some of them for the house. Hmm maybe a DIY project for the holidays

  1. I never espoused the CTFD method, too wishy-washy for me! In a stressed car situation as pictured, my take was ‘Everybody be silent right now and stop acting up or I stop the car and put you out – and I don’t care if we are in the middle of the Karroo and you starve to death.’ It worked.
