While following the Austin Kleon thread – I came across his newspaper blackout poems. Wonderful: he takes a page from a newspaper, chooses an article, and writes. First by selecting some words that jump off the page at him – then blacking out the surround with a permanent marker. Simple.
He published a book in 2010, has had various gallery shows and now makes a poem a day that he posts on instagram.com/austinkleon. I wrote on Monday about finding his book “Steal Like an Artist” (and will write more) = but these poems are a perfect example of borrowing, stealing, reusing, repurposing. Also known as – working with what you have to hand / or making what you have to hand – work. And it makes me want to do more.
