A brief history of the world … aka how did we get here?

One of the things I love about facebook is you are never too far away from a great share. Sure there are many overshares, undershares, myfavouritecatpicture shares and waytoomuchinformation shares … but my facebook friends are pretty savvy folks and come up with many gems. Like this one.

Reddit – that social news and entertainment website, which is apparently one of the busiest websites in the world (and which I don’t really understand or use as it is undoubtedly too hip for me), recently challenged their users to come up with a short and accurate description of their/other countries.  I thought the results were great.  And added the South African one**.

(220px-CryBelovedCountry** The title on my flag is a riff on a brilliant book written by Alan Paton: Cry, the Beloved Country. It tells  of the damage that apartheid brought to everyday people. It’s beautiful. As is the film made of the book. And every word and second is what happened here. Images found in the public domain. All copyright Reddit.)

Note: Wikipedia’s description of Reddit:  /ˈrɛdɪt/,[3] stylized as reddit,[4] is a social news and entertainment website where registered users submit content in the form of links or text posts. Users then vote each submission “up” or “down” to rank the post and determine its position on the site’s pages. Content entries are organized by areas of interest called “subreddits”. For more info on the phenomenon that is Reddit watch this video.)

  1. @winstonmoreton

Trending in NZ is a call for a new flag. They have to be an anachronistic waste of money. Certainly not something to die for any more so good Reddit for the send up.

  2. I’d never even heard of reddit until about a month ago, when one of my blog posts made it on there, somehow, racking up 900 views in a day…
