My very first series of jobs was in advertising – first as an accounts clerk, then receptionist, through a couple of secretary roles and finally junior copywriter. I wasn’t very good as a ‘creative’, should have been an accounts manager – but was lucky enough to have been employed by a guy who needed someone to write body copy under his headlines. Which allowed me to stash away enough money to finance my move to England in 1985. The first love of my life was a commercials director, I lived in London with a very successful copywriter, and my youngest brother, Chris, is a hardworking adman. Though his life is less martinis on Madison Avenue, more practicing of the dark arts; as he works on a branch of the business that is prohibited, by law, from doing any actual advertising.
These days children are protected in advertising – with good reason, there are monsters out there who may prey on them. Not on some of these kids though, they are positively demonic. And some of the ads, well – they almost beggar description. But they brightened up a dull day – and I dedicate them to all the Mad Men I have known.
The devil is in the buffet.
Fledgling serial killers.
They’re bringing sexy back …
Catch them young, teach them right.
