It’s been impossible to leaf through a design or fashion magazine in the last few weeks without coming across the news that Italian designer Paola Navone had created a tableware collection for Crate & Barrel, to be unveiled on September 9. Sofagirl, the magazine queen, had alerted me to it but even I had already jotted down a reminder to go check it out.
Ms. Navone partnered up with Anthropologie a few months ago, a collaboration that gave birth to items ranging from table lamps to pillows. The collection she has designed for Crate & Barrel is entirely focussed on dining and entertaining, and is divided into three lines: Como, Mallorca and Riviera.
Paola Navone is an influential Italian designer who became well-known in the ’80’s, in a country where most influential designers are male. Ms. Navone has a knack for re-inventing or taking inspiration from the past and redesign it in a contemporary form. She loves traditional handicraft that she weaves into her contemporary interior design to spectacular effects. Somehow, her choices of colors and lights both manage to look new and awake memories.
The displays within the stores are prominent and well arranged but everything can be bought on-line too. Unlike limited collections that disappear within a few days of unveiling, this will stick around for a little while. I was mostly drawn to the whites and blues of the Como collection and I could have easily picked up plates, silverware, napkins and the Riviera pendant lamp. In the end, displaying unusual restraint, I walked out with only a mix and match of place mats.
But if you are in need of sprucing up your kitchen or dining room, go have a look. Right now, all items ship free if ordered on-line.
