The perfection of simplicity – we choose our timeless style.

Posted in Style & Travel, Things We Love, and Women's issues

sofagirl: In honour of “Simple Week” camparigirl and I thought we would each pick one outfit that we thought was restrained perfection. I did consider jeans and a v-neck cashmere sweater – my favourite outfit of all time. But then I remembered this dress. It was designed for Celine Spring /Summer 2013 by Phoebe Philo.

I love everything about it. The colour, the cut and line, the fabric, length and sleeve. I would wear this dress for day in the summer with flip-flops. In the evening with some fabulous heels and a statement necklace or cuff. And for winter I would pair it with a hip length cardigan or jacket and high brown pumps or boots.

In fact the entire collection is gorgeous. I could have bought each piece  (excluding the shorts and those furry Birkenstocks!) and worn them for the rest of my life. But I’ve just invested in a holiday cottage.

So I will just have to dream as I sit happily on my  new ‘stoep’ in my old jeans and v-neck, taking in the view. Which is simply perfect, too.

camparigirl: When I find myself agonizing over what to wear, the fall back is always a pair of jeans or black pants with a white shirt. There is something about a white shirt that is crisp and well put together no matter the occasion. Both jeans and trousers can be dressed down or up with shoes and accessories  and, with the choices out there, it’s pretty impossible not to find some denim that flatters our figures. And black is always slimming and elongating. And classy. I have a penchant for Anne Fontaine white shirts because they are invariably made of good cotton and designed for girls’ bodies.

But, as much as I find pants easy, dresses are my favourite wardrobe item. A dress only requires a quick thought about shoes and maybe a jacket; it does the styling for you. And there is nothing like a dress to make you feel like a lady. I have been in love with Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, who design Valentino, for a couple of seasons now. And it’s not just the dreamy evening gowns that do it for me.

This dress from the Fall 2013 collection is everything I look for in a piece of clothing: beautiful but understated fabric, a shape that is at the same time  sexy and modest, and a length that covers the knees. High heels and boots can have you go from the office to an evening out. I will probably not own this particular dress in this lifetime but  appreciating beauty doesn’t come with a price tag. And I can always check the Zara racks for a knock-off.

  1. I love the last one – the glimpse of shoulder and the neither sleeves or gloves thing is very clever.

  2. I think I could probably sell my soul to wear that final tweed dress. With Kurt Geiger shoes and a simple gold necklace I could take on the world. Sadly I could never afford or fit into it but thanks for the dream x

    • That is what I like about dreaming: if channelled right, it’s cheap and uplifting. Plus, you never know…
