Why we love Africa …#4

Posted in Things We Love

I wouldn’t normally recommend an ad – but the sentiment is beautiful and the Elephant Whisperer’s story is true.

  1. It’s despicable how poachers all over Africa are killing elephants with impunity. They fly in, shoot them, saw off their tusks and fly out, leaving the animals to bleed to death. The few rangers who are trying to protect them are fighting a (mostly) losing battle. It’s just heartbreaking. Most of the ivory is sold to the Chinese market, where there is still high demand. So called “freedom fighters” have figured out this is a way to make money and poaching has reached an all time high (there was a wonderful series on poaching in Africa in the NYT for anyone who would like to know more). I have seen photos of these herds making the pilgrimage to the Elephant Whisperer’s house and they are incredibly moving.

    • We have a huge problem with rhino too. Poachers killing them for their horns, and selling the spoil on into the Asian market. So that some silly men can pretend to themselves their willies will get harder/longer. All I can say to them is the horn killed the rhino … it’s not going to end well for you either.
